Sustainable Building Challenge 2011
After Tokyo 2005 and Melbourne 2008, the Sustainable Building Challenge returns to Europe, hosted by the international conference SB11, held in Helsinki on the 18th - 21st October.
The third edition of the event organized by iiSBE focuses on the design challenges of all-round sustainability, opening up to all types of buildings and taking a step forward towards sustainable neighborhoods.
The best projects submitted will be invited to participate in design panels, created to show and discuss the design challenges and successes with the SB11 audience and the other panel attendees; all the selected projects will be showcased in the SBTheatre, which will feature audio and video presentations of the projects, each visible also on demand.

Canadian Team
The iiSBE SB11 Canadian Team for the World Sustainable Building Conference to be held in Helsinki, Finland will participate in this conference by presenting recent examples of the most environmentally-advanced new buildings in Canada. These buildings will be evaluated against a benchmark that represents current new building practice in the region where the buildings are located.
The SB11 Canadian Team will also examine community and social issues inherent in the building design. Team members represent a mix of private- and public-sector interests from across the country. They are committed to, and capable of, representing Canada and making a substantial contribution to furthering the sustainable building agenda within Canada and internationally.

The tasks the Canadian SB11 team is undertaking include the following:
Participate in the International Framework Committee
responsible for establishing the protocols for conducting the comparative assessments and preparing the presentations.Adapt the core assessment framework
to regional and national conditions, and develop specific information required for benchmarking.Call for proposals describing buildings
from across Canada that meet the submission criteria.
Select the three to five projects to receive a detailed assessment
to determine environmental performance across a wide range of criteria.Prepare a detailed presentation on each evaluated project for delivery at SB11
Select other projects for poster presentations at the conference.
Prepare a presentation on all Canadian projects plus other international projects having significant design aspects of relevance to Canada for presentation at meetings and conferences in Canada in the period following the conference to showcase the Canadian projects and share the knowledge about international developments in the area of sustainability.
Call for Canadian Entries (closed)
The Sustainable Building Challenge is an international co-operative process to develop a deeper understanding of performance assessment tools and highlight innovative sustainable building design techniques. The Challenge will form a key part of the Seventh World Sustainable Building Conference (SB11) to be held in Helsinki, Finland from October 18 to 21, 2011.
In December 2009, the iiSBE SB11 Canadian Team issued a 'Call for Entries' to search for projects that represent some of the best examples of sustainable buildings designed and developed in Canada over the past three years. The submission deadline has past and two projects selected in June 2010 are now undergoing a comprehensive evaluations so they can be presented at SB11. These projects are:
- Enermodal's new 2,150 sq. m. office building in Kitchener, Ontario; and
- Okanagan College's new 7,335 sq. m. sustainable trades training building in Penticton, British Columbia.
Please click on the links below for further information on SB11 and the submission requirements that were used to select the two projects that will represent Canada in Helsinki.
Call for Poster Presentations (Submission deadline extended!)
The iiSBE SB11 Canadian Team is now inviting submissions for poster projects to be displayed at the Seventh World Sustainable Building Conference (SB11) to be held in Helsinki, Finland from October 18 to 21, 2011.
These poster projects will complement a pair of Canadian projects that were selected earlier for detailed assessments and will be presented at SB11. However, poster projects being solicited under this call do not have to undergo a detailed evaluation.
Poster projects will provide SB11 attendees with a more complete understanding of the progress of sustainable building in Canada and enhance our country's participation in the conference.
