GBC 2000 - Sweden
Buildings selected for full assessment and posters

Swedish Case Studies

The Swedish buildings selected for full assessment have been chosen from the housing fair in Malmö* 2001. The buildings are at the moment (autumn 2000) under construction.

Bo01** has taken as its theme The City of Tomorrow in the ecologically sustainable information society and in an era of well-being.
The district is planned as a place where people can both live and work. Areas have been reserved for shops, offices, restaurants, club facilities etc. The setting is that of an intimate, close-knit block development, with squares and lanes as well as a canal, a leisure craft marina, and lots of greenery and biodiversity in parks and courtyards. About ten developers have begun the construction of about 600 dwelling units - and more will follow. Very well known architects like Ralph Erskine, Mario Campi, Jon Ruble and Gert Wingårdh are engaged. Green commitments are for instance:

  • The total energy demand will be produced locally from renewable energy sources.
  • Wastewater will be used as a raw material base and heat source.
  • New refuse separation technology will be introduced.

* Malmö is situated on the latitude 56oN

The Swedish buildings will also be evaluated with a National environmental assessment system called EcoEffect. This system is focussing environmental effects related to use of energy and materials (LCA), indoor and outdoor environment and life cycle costs. In these parts it is more elaborated than GBC despite the smaller number of criteria. Both GBC2000 and EcoEffect results will be shown at the exhibition in Maastricht.
